To anyone in need of a fabric Coronavirus mask:

Just a few weeks ago, when the Coronavirus situation started to get out of control, and PPE supplies very low, as a designer/seamstress, I had no choice but to start making Coronavirus masks for myself and my family. Given the overbearing shortage of frontline masks, I also wanted to help out first responders and other frontlines as much as I could in time of the biggest crisis I have ever seen in this country. I took some time to research and develop the best options, methods, and patterns with whatever information and resources were available at the time, particularly in light of the sudden shortage of fabric and other materials. I knew I wasn’t the only one at work on this, as people all over the world have been trying to help out as much as they could. My goal was to sew fabric Coronavirus masks that were as safe and protective from the virus as possible, while also being comfortable, appealing, and reusable/cleanable. Once others saw my masks, I received an overwhelming response. Given the gravity of the situation, I could not refuse others’ requests.

I have decided to use my existing Corset Talk website and Facebook page to share some basic information about my masks, and streamline the process during this difficult time.

While I donate to frontlines, I otherwise charge a nominal fee to recoup some costs, prevent unnecessarily excessive orders, and be able to afford to donate more masks to frontlines. If interested, please contact me directly for more information and details, including pricing.

Each mask takes some time to make, including top stitching, a virus-grade furnace filter, nose contouring, etc. Everyone who has received my masks has been very happy with them, and I have received an amazing feedback and have made many people happy. I am happy to be able to help others during this time and also ease their Coronavirus-induced anxiety. I make women’s, men’s, and kids’ sizes. Almost all are made to order. Upon request, I also custom-make for frontlines and persons with special needs (including children).

The masks can be cleaned in a variety of ways. I have cleaned my own masks after a use with Lysol or Clorox wipes, 70% alcohol spray, or hot water with soap as per Dr. Fauci. My preferred method is gently ironing, which disinfects, being very careful not to melt the middle filter, or especially the elastic. I have also machine-washed my masks and then machine-dried. A mask can also be air dried after being disinfected during a wash. The point is to make the middle filter layer last as long as possible, without damaging it, while keeping the mask disinfected after each use.

I have a variety of fabrics available. However, given the current limited supply, I prefer to reserve solid colors (such as black) for frontlines such as police officers.

Once sewn, I iron each mask to finish its look and to disinfect it, immediately prior to placing it in a sealed bag.

When I put my mask on, I start with the chin, then over the nose, and then the elastic over the ears. Lastly, I tighten the nose piece to fit snugly over the nose. I avoid touching the mask during use, only touching the elastic when putting the mask on or taking it off.
